Me and Weezy have a conflicted relationship. In some respects, I think he’s hilarious. In other ways, I think he is the worst thing that’s ever happened to rap.
Such ambivalence is probably why I “forgot” to post his new track about Kobe last week. But we now have a good video that includes complementary Kobe highlights tape in addition to Lil Waynes tribute song. Plus, he did sample my man Elie Seckbach and it’s the only song I’ve ever heard that has a Trevor Ariza mention.
It’s Weezy, baby. And he wants to thank all of you that congratulated him on his new-to-the-world, first-born son Dwayne Carter III. Yup, the real Carter III is here.
I want to shout out to everybody who came through on the two-way to congratulate me. LeBron sent me a message, Michael Smith texted me and Chris Paul sent me a Hornets baby jersey, which was amazing.
He discusses how his life essentially revolves around sports before moving on to the NBA. And, yup, he’s prognositcating.
I watched the Celtics get their rings last week and that was a very emotional night. Paul Pierce deserved it most, so it was great to see him get it. But will the Celtics repeat? No.
The champions this year will come from the West so consider me your Western Conference correspondent.
The Lakers look wonderful. I think they won their first three games by 65 points combined. It’s tough to predict how many wins they’re gonna get this season. If they keep going like this and they reach 60 then I think they’ll pass the Celtics 66 wins last year, which would be nothing short of amazing.
And it’s getting a little harder to post this stuff with tongue-in-cheek mockery when he has the same opinions of guys like Trevor Ariza (a definite key to that team) and Derrick Rose (a Hall of Fame talent) as I do.
Lastly, he keeps the block hot by jumping on the disparaging Greg Oden bandwagon.
Greg Oden is a bust. He’s gotta show me something, man. I don’t get it. At what point in time was he dominant? I’ve never seen it. You’ve never seen it. Maybe NBA officials know something we don’t. That’s all I can figure. Maybe somebody on that staff has seen something we haven’t. But until he shows me something, I’m gonna declare him a bust. Damn shame, too.
Weezy writes more than Bill Simmons these days. And here he is makin more thoughts rain on the NBA (in Sports Guy mailbag style no less). This is his advice to guys like Kobe and LeBron being wooed by deep-pocketed international clubs:
if you get one of these big clubs overseas offering one of these guys $150 million for three years? Absolutely, take it. Hell, Kobe already speaks a trillion languages, so it wouldn’t be new for him. LeBron should really go ’cause he’s got so much time. He could spend three years over there and come back $150 million dollars richer. Who wouldn’t take that? Come, on. The NBA better get it together or else they’re going to lose some marquee players, and it’s going to hurt bad.
On his pick for Rookie of the Year:
I’m a Beasley fan. He’s straight up. He’s real. He plays with emotion and drive and physicality. He gets to where he needs to be on the court. And when he gets to his spot, if he’s not gonna shoot it in your face man, he’s gonna dunk it in your face. And if he’s not gonna dunk it in your face he’s gonna dish it to the next man. There’s not a player in the game like Michael Beasley.
On his boy Chris Duhon:
I love the move they made naming my hometown dude Chris Duhon the starting point guard over Stephon Marbury. He is like, the man at home, and I just want him to know I’m pulling for him. So shout out to Chris Duhon, you’re the man.
There really shouldn’t even be a need to post this link to Weezy’s latest ESPN blog entry since I really don’t want anyone who isn’t already reading it religiously to read Both Teams Played Hard. But, alas, it must be done.
Thus far (this is his third post), it’s actually not as great as Hibachi’s thing or Ron Artest’s Hip Hop Game Journal but, ultimately, it’s a blog by Wayne so you know it’s gonna melt. And for the first time he drops some thoughts on the NBA, mostly about CP3 and unexpectedly insightful.
When you look at Chris off the court, he has this wonderful 15-year-old smile. But when he’s on that court, this little dimple forms right above his eyes in the middle of his forehead and it never leaves. From the beginning of the game to the end of the game, it’s like this little devilish grin right between his eyes. That’s that killer instinct, and that lets you know that that kid is focused. He doesn’t care who’s in front of him, ’cause he will win. He will prevail.
Lil Wayne goes on to talk about how they are good friends and that he crashes at CP3’s house when he’s in Nawlins, where they presumably sip promethazine, keep the block hot and throw currency at women. (Bron, Flash, Joe Johnson and others reportedly stay at Chris Paul’s house too when they’re in town this so it’s not really that odd in and of itself, but it does seem a little unnecessary since Mr. Carter was born and raised in New Orleans.) He also tells a nice lil yarn about the time he almost beat Paul in a free-throw shooting contest.
Once me and Chris had a free throw competition, best out of ten. I went first, and I hit my first six shots. He was like, hold up, man. This is a joke, right? Unfortunately, I ended up going seven for ten, and he went eight for ten. We did this on Chris Brown’s basketball goal, ’cause I was on tour with him at that point. Chris Brown loves basketball. I mean, he travels with a basketball goal is how much he loves it. Every day when he pulls up to the venue like six hours before they go on, they unload the goal and his whole entourage—all his dancers and everything—are out there playing. So when Chris Paul came to one of our shows, we had to go over and ask Chris if we could borrow his ball and use his goal. I got beat, but I’m looking for a re-match.
Most importantly, Weezy knows the ledge on his stats. Seriously, who would know this?
Shout out to the Oklahoma City Thunder, too. I think they’ll be the third NBA franchise that will actually have a winning team in their first season.
John Hollinger and Roland Beech better step their games up.
